Journalism Blog
Hi! My name is Will. I am currently a freshman at the University of Maryland and am from Lutherville, Maryland. I am a Communication major, but I am currently exploring the option of trying to get into the Journalism School and focusing on Sports Broadcasting. I grew up playing many sports. I was the quarterback on my high school football team and played on my high school basketball and golf team. During my senior year, I even decided to add a fourth sport and played lacrosse in order to be able to play one year with my brother Jack. Sports have always been a very important part of my life.

My Family is very important to me. I am the oldest of four and have two younger brothers and a younger sister. They are all currently in high school. One of the main reasons I chose to attend Maryland was to be close enough to my siblings to still be able to attend all of their activities. I enjoy spending a lot of my free time going to watch their football, basketball, and lacrosse games. Not a single day goes by without me having some form of communication with a member from my family.

At Maryland, I play on the golf team. Ever since I was a little kid, I always dreamed about playing a sport at Maryland. I do not think it has really sunk in yet that I am getting to live out a dream of mine. Being on the golf team has provided me with many opportunities to create new friendships with many athletes from across the world. Playing a sport in college has taught me a lot and has given me many amazing opportunities and many moments of adversity. The early morning practices and workouts and the late nights studying can sometimes feel like a burden, but I have learned that everything worth getting in life requires hard work and sacrifice.

Media Interests

Using media, especially social media, to create a brand has always interested me. Media has given everyone a platform to have an influence on people. I have been very interested in learning why people use media in certain ways. People troll, hate on, and constantly promote negativity towards others, while others use media to promote positivity, optimism, and use it as a tool to uplift others. I have always been curious about learning more ways one can use media to improve their lives, instead of having media take away from one’s life.

I have always wanted to become a head coach at a college program one day in my life and have always been interested in learning more about how a college athletic program can use media to get its name out to the community to give people an inside look at their team. Some college programs do it very well. They post on platforms such as Instagram and Twitter a few times a week and will even use platforms such as YouTube to create more lengthy content such as a “Day in The Life” video of one of their student athletes. College teams that embrace the use of media gain an advantage in recruiting over other teams and allows people outside of the team to feel as if they are a part of the journey the team goes through each season. I have always been curious to learn the reasons why many teams and coaches still refuse to embrace the new media age even though using it can provide its team with an advantage over the teams that do not.

Answers
1. Changes in media have been directly related to changes in American culture and society. Media in America was first seen with the newspaper and magazine industries. During the 18th and 19th century, newspapers and magazines told the entire story about what was going on in America. Newspapers covered entire news stories and reported the details. During this time, people were concerned about getting the facts and the stories right. As time went on, technological advances were made. These advances led to a more digital age where people were connected to devices daily. The technology and innovations such as social media created a society that constantly wanted headlines. People were less interested in receiving true news and were more interested in getting instant entertainment. Changes in media have directly related to changes in American culture and society. When media changes occur, America’s culture and society tends to change too.
2. Athletes can use media in many ways in order to promote themselves. The most important part of this is actually using social media and being active on it instead of completely ignoring it. There have been many studies that have shown a correlation but not direct causation with an increased use of media leading to increased depression and anxiety. Much of the research has shown that the media can have an overall negative effect on millennials. On the other hand, the media also has many positives. It will be very interesting to see the effects social media will have on millennials.
4. Changes in media have related to changes in American sports such as the NFL greatly. For example, the NFL has had to gain an increased presence on social media in order to keep up with the growing number of people on social media. This has led the NFL to being extremely active on social media. They have also been extremely active on platforms such as YouTube by posting condensed game highlights and behind the scenes content to keep fans engaged in the game.
